Barry Berman and Betsy Mullen

Barry Berman has devoted his career to building the long-term care community in Chelsea and the surrounding areas by developing innovative models of care. He has been the CEO of Chelsea Jewish Lifecare for 48 years, since completing his master’s degree in Rehabilitation Administration.

Mr. Berman began his tenure in Chelsea by expanding and rebuilding the Chelsea Jewish Nursing Home in 1983. In collaboration with his colleagues, Mr. Berman built the Cohen-Florence-Levine Estates, Massachusetts’ first mixed-income assisted living facility, which opened in 1996. The team then developed the Florence and Chafetz Home for Specialized Care in 2001, a more enhanced assisted living targeted to those with dementia and other compromising conditions.

Additionally, Mr. Berman is responsible for developing the award-winning Leonard Florence Center for Living, the first urban Green House® model nursing home in the nation. The Center, which opened in February 2010, provides skilled nursing care in a home environment to the elderly and those with medical and physical disabilities. Two of the Green House® homes at the Leonard Florence Center were originally dedicated to those with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) and MS (multiple sclerosis), the first such residences in the nation. In 2016, a third specialized residence was opened for 10 additional individuals living with ALS. 2020 saw the opening of the Stein Family Center for Well-Being, which consists of 30 private rooms for individuals who are dependent upon ventilators.

Mr. Berman’s awards include the “Leaders of Tomorrow” award from Long Term Living magazine in for his consistent effort to make a difference in long-term care on a national level. He was presented with the “Award of Honor” from LeadingAge for his work in expanding the world of possibilities for aging services. Most recently, Barry received the “Dr. Herbert Shore Award of Honor” from the Association of Jewish Aging Services, which is the highest award given by the organization.

Betsy Mullen, RN, MS, LNHA, serves as Chief Operating Officer at Legacy Lifecare. She has over 48 years of experience in the health care industry, working in settings across the heath care continuum. Ms. Mullen also oversees operations at Legacy Lifecare.

Additionally, she has held the positions of Executive Director at most of the skilled nursing facilities and the assisted living facilities, Executive Vice President of Clinical Operations and Chief Clinical Officer during her tenure at CJL.

She has been a member of the Peer Network Board for the Green House Project, now Center for Innovation, and she remains active in the culture change movement across the United States.
