BRADD MARQUIS

Afro-Bradd. On his new EP,I Choose You, The SOULMAN Music Group artist Bradd Marquis is bringing some super heroics to the genre of urban adult contemporary, infusing Afrobeats with R&B and Soul for the hungry ears of those who grew up loving Uptown, LaFace and the rhythmically soulful R&B of the late 80's through the early 2000's. With theI Choose You EP, Marquis is re-opening the freshness seal for R&B lovers. Marquis is revolutionizing Black music for who’s got now and who’s got next.

But Marquis is not new to this; he’s been true to this for 16 years. So true that for the last four, Marquis has been touring the globe, reminding audiences of every stripe of the mystique and power of Sam Cooke in sold-out tribute concerts to the original Black music entrepreneur, songwriter, and soul crooner. The road tour homage to Cooke has also been a full circle moment for Marquis, reminding him as he recorded his latest love letters of sound that the baritone, too, can shake it up by mixing the old with the new. Much like how Cooke left The Soul Stirrers to sing secular music, eternally marrying gospel and the blues in the ears of the culture, Marquis’s latest blends the Mother Continent’s polyrhythmic Afro-beats with the emotional blood beats of Black America’s funk, soul, and R&B. So, yeah, Afro-Bradd sounds about right to describe the new sonic shades he and producers like newcomer Prosee and longtime collaborator Jerry Compere have birthed on Marquis’s innovative six-song offering for grown and sexy listeners.

With Production from newcomer Prosee (Ariginal), longtime collaborator Jerry Compere and co-writing from indie soul star DeBorah Bond (on the rhapsodic “Dance Amongst the Stars”), it’s the lyrics as much as the hybrid production grooves that distinguish Marquis from the cynical, hyper-sexual trends of the moment. These are vibrant songs about love written from the point of view of a husband and father still deeply in love and grateful for all he has been gifted. The joy envelopes every lover’s serenade throughout this passion project. On the EP’s title cut, Marquis delivers us to the interior thoughts of a man walking down the aisle to his forever love, thinking about who he’s chosen and the promise of what’s to come. On “My Everything,” Marquis fights through his fears to be vulnerable to his heart space to express the power of their healing and restorative love. “OU” reminisces about the first time he and his wife met, made love, and the immediacy of their connection. Meanwhile, “Date Night” provides a blueprint for how to keep their home fires burning past love’s first blush. Humming with Spanish guitar and Afro-Latin jazz flourishes, “Dance Amongst the Stars” is a sweeping tango celebration of his enduring partnership, daring couples not to take their partner in hand on the dance floor.
Finally, "Missing Piece," co-written with Oshy Byrd, is a heartfelt dedication to finding that special someone who completes you. With powerful vocals that soar over lush instrumentation and irresistible grooves, a vivid picture of love, gratitude, and unwavering devotion is painted.Marquis’s seventh project is steamy, seductive, emotionally open, and embracing, with none of the coarse narratives that pass for today’s R&B jawns.

Not that the indie soul man from Jersey whose introduction was the open-hearted NYC hit, “Radio,” from his 2007 debut album, Finding My Way, or the deeply expressed gratitude in 2013’s Angelo Ray
produced, the Billboard Hot R&B charter Thank You (peak #67), and his more recent exploration of love’s dual-sided bittersweetness in 2020’s Love... Three albums, one EP, and two mixtapes deep, with gems like “Free,” “Always,” “Love Will Find A Way,” “Break Up,” and “The One You Love,” Marquis has been unapologetically a man on Eros’s mission. With his ongoing smash tour of Sam Cooke’s legacy songs, appearing on such televised showcases as Apollo Live, 106 & Park, Showtime at the Apollo, and sharing stages with various legends on crowd pleasers like the Budweiser Superfest and the Soul Summer Tour, Bradd Marquis has stayed true to his calling. Further, with Iron Sharpens, a new podcast from Marquis, launching soon on all streaming platforms, will only further carry his message of Black Love and healthy manhood to anchor thriving communities. With the support of college, indie, and Internet radio, social media, and various streaming platforms, I Choose You will continue to build the Bradd Marquis legacy as a man unafraid to sing about the beauty of love, marriage, and commitment as one man who knows.
